Afghanistan: What
Next? with Prof. Devin Hagerty
The United States is entering its second decade of warfare in Afghanistan. It
has spent almost half a trillion dollars and suffered 10,000 American
casualties. At a time of domestic and world crisis, it is spending $10 billion
per month there.
Can we “win” in Afghanistan? What is “winning”? Should we get out or stay in?
If in, what should we do and when should we leave? What do the Afghanis think?
What do they want? And what about the effect on Pakistan next door, a sometime
American friend with an unstable government, dominating military and nuclear
arms? What about the effect on Iran, an erstwhile American enemy pushing for
regional dominance and possibly for nuclear weapons as well?
Prof. Devin Hagerty
Ask Prof. Hagerty, distinguished author, international relations and national
security expert and former Chair of the Department of Political Science at UMBC
on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at Rolling Road Golf Club. Dr. Hagerty is an expert on
Afghanistan, Iran and South Asia. In a brief talk and Q&A session, Professor
Hagerty will focus on what the likely security and geopolitical consequences
will be if the United States sticks to its plan to remove the bulk of U.S.
forces from Afghanistan by 2014; and what the consequences would be if we
lengthened the withdrawal timeframe (thereby prolonging the commitment of
substantial U.S. military forces in Afghanistan beyond 2014).
