About Our Club

WHAT IS ROTARY?

In 1976, the Rotary International Board of Directors was interested in creating a concise definition of the fundamental aspects of Rotary. They assembled a committee and requested that a one-sentence definition of Rotary be prepared. After numerous drafts, the committee presented this definition, which has been used ever since in various Rotary publications: "Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world." Rotary's 31,000 clubs in more than 165 countries and regions encourage high ethical standards and carry out humanitarian projects to address such issues as poverty, health, hunger, education, and the environment. Founded in Chicago in 1905 as the world's first volunteer service organization, Rotary quickly expanded around the globe. Clubs meet weekly for fellowship to discuss local and global topics. Clubs are nonreligious, nongovernmental, and open to every race, culture, and creed. One of the primary principles of Rotary is to network and to support business conducted between members. As the oldest service club in the world, Rotary club members represent a cross-section of the community's owners, executives, managers, political leaders, and professionals - people who make decisions and influence policy.

About The Catonsville Sunrise Rotary Club

Charter Date:  May 8, 2001

Why Was This Club Created?
We are a part of Rotary International's turn of the century emphasis on starting and growing new clubs that cater to the service desires of the post - boom generation.   RI surveyed our region in terms of existing service clubs versus the demographics of our community and found that Catonsville was "underserved".  We were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Columbia Town Center - and gathered together through the efforts of Rotary District 7620 and the early leaders.

Our Club Philosophy
Most of us are in business and have families, but we want to serve our community and the world.  The most efficient way for us to do this is to Use the Global Reach of RI and the Format of Rotary to serve our Community and our World.  Sometimes that service comes from the checkbook; sometimes it comes from rolling your sleeves up.  Either way, Rotary provides us with a way to use our talents in an efficient way to serve our communities.

Our Club Goals
Each year we re-evaluate goals and what we are doing to achieve those goals.  We have goals related to serving our local community, serving the international community, serving the youth of our community, and serving our club.  We are on track to be recognized by our Rotary District as "Club of the Year" by 2010.
