Club Meeting October 7

Catonsville Sunrise Rotary
Meeting minutes- October 7, 2009

Susan was super-greeter today and provide the Rotary Minute about the Rotary Community Corps
Rosemary gave a fine inspiration

Announcements
-Cal and run spoke about their experiences at the Samaritan Women’s open house yesterday evening but I’m not convinced that Russ actually went
-Rosemary is going to try to email some pics from it
-Bruce received another recognition plaque thanking him and Sam’s Club for sponsoring the race.

Happy $$
-Brent for having the chance to be best main in a wedding again and perhaps having the chance to redeem himself for past performances in this role?
-Larry thanked Balt. County taxpayers for his next “conference”
-George- asked Larry to take him too
-Cal- for the Catonsville Times race coverage
-George- for the ravens
-Bruce V- a silent happy dollar? Surely he must have unloaded another pet by now

Guest speaker
Miles Hill from BGE discussed the BGE peak rewards program and other ways to save money on energy usage. It was a fine presentation about their new thermostats can cycle on and off during peak usage hours which are typically 1-6 pm. By participating in the program, homeowners can save up to $25 dollars per month plus can get a free $300.00 programmable touch screen t-stat which can be programmed online from a computer. Having a programmable thermostat will save additional money too. If your house has 2 zone a/c, you can participate twice. There are different levels of participation and Miles noted that last summer, BGE never even initiated the cycling process so participating homeowners really benefited.

Miles also talked about other BGE programs such as a quick energy audit which only costs $40 but is free if you agree to adopt at least three of their suggestions. Comprehensive energy audits are also available from BGE. He also discussed a sort of cash for clunker appliance program to help people afford new appliances that are energy-star rated. He discussed “vampire electricity” usage which is when an unused electrical outlet can cause energy use. Homeowners can save money simply by using child-proofing outlet covers. He also discussed “smart” surge protectors which completely shut off energy to appliances that are not in use. Apparently, a toaster plugged in that is not in use, still draws energy.

Next week District Governor. Paul Frey will be visiting so please make an effort to be present for the meeting.

We had a good turnout today with 16 members present and Alan was also present. See you all next week.

Club Meeting October 14

Catonsville Sunrise Rotary
Meeting minutes- October 14, 2009

-Tom gave a great inspiration
-Richard spoke about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and mentioned that each soldier takes 21 steps, then pauses for 21 seconds before doing the about-face and repeating.
-Brent gave the Rotary Minute about a club that gets seeds which would normally be discarded and uses them to grow food

Announcements
-Cal reminded members to please respond to the survey about the potential club merger
-John brought us up to date on this year’s Dictionary Project which seems to me moving right along. The dictionaries have been ordered and there are over 1000 to be delivered.
-Rosemary suggested a pot-luck dinner at her house on 10/30 and suggested that we all wear our ugliest shirt
-Eric brought members up to date on the relationship with St. Agnes Foundation for next year. Things look promising that they will continue their involvement and we were assured that we can expect their runner numbers to increase from this year

Happy $$
-Larry thanked taxpayers again for his recent trip
-Rosemary spoke about her successful yard sale and clean attic
-Jonathan- that his son Leo’s first sentence was uttered in the middle of the night and that it was, “I want my Mama”
-Ed recently celebrated his 79th Birthday at Medieval Times- Happy Birthday Ed!
-Brent gave a dollar for a future story
-Bill noted that he was wearing his wife’s work short by accident
-Richard noted that President Obama may have locked up this year’s Heisman Trophy because he watched a college football game

Guest speaker
District Governor Paul Frey spoke and acted a little bit for us today. He talked about becoming a “Rotary hero” which is to “give life to something bigger than yourself”.
He gave is a brief bio and then spoke about the District 7620 Strategic Plan. It consists of 5 prongs and he encouraged each of us to:
1. Take Risks
2. Respect others- see value in the other person
3. Support the Rotary Foundation as a club and as individuals
4. Support Polio Plus as a club by giving $1k for each of the next 3 years. Collectively, Rotary has raised over $800 million dollars and we are close to wiping it out. There were about 400 cases in 4 countries this past year: Pakistan, Afganistan, India, and Nigeria (P.A.I.N.)
5. Go to a District Conference. The next one is in April 2010 in Gettysburg, PA

We had 14 members in attendance and 4 guest including Paul Frey and Asst. Gov. Al Thompson

Announcements
-Once we are able to wrap us this year’s race and get final figures, a kick-off meeting will be scheduled to start planning for next year. All are invited and the date and time will be announced soon.
-Joe has resigned as VP for the remainder of his current term and Richard Hiteshew has agreed to take over this position for him.

Happy $$

-Larry plugged the Phillies

-Cal gave for a Scottish festival he went to in Denver last weekend
-Tom- talked about his grandson who insists on running even though he has a bad ankle
-Doug celebrated a trip to the pumpkin patch with his 2 boys

Business

1. Jonathan gave a Treasurer Report as well as a Race report. The race is wrapping up and there are a few items outstanding in terms of collection of sponsorship money and race expenses but we should have the final numbers soon. So far, it looks like the race cleared about 15k, give or take but that is just an estimate.

2. The potential merger with the storied Catonsville Evening Club was discussed. Results of the survey were discussed and the Board has recommended that we agree to meet in the evening for Dinner 1x per months, the first Wednesday of each month. Time and place are to be determined but all agreed that it was important to reach out to the evening club to try to absorb their remaining membership

***don’t forget that Friday evening is dinner at Rosemary’s house and she needs an RSVP

We had 12 members in attendance and Alan Ray was a guest.
