Guest speaker
Andrew gave an interesting talk about the 100 year old American Cancer Society and their efforts in the fight against cancer. We all have a 1 in 3 chance of getting cancer. They primarily focus their efforts in 4 areas:
a. getting well- improving the quality of care for patients and answering questions on their hotline where they have trained specialists who help people gather information. They also pair people with cancer with people who have gone through similar treatment.
b. Staying well-focusing on early detection, screening and prevention efforts.
c. Cures-since 1913 the society has donated 3 billion dollars to cancer research. Outside of the federal government, they are the largest provider of research dollars and in 2008, the invested 16.5 million $$ in research in Maryland
d. Advocacy- they attempt to educate state and federal policy makers. They have not taken an official position on President Obama’s health care reform yet.

October 25, 2009 they have a Making Strides 4 mile walk in Baltimore to promote breast cancer awareness
Their Relay for Life fundraiser last year raised 400 million dollars and had over 3.5 million participants in the US and 19 other countries.

Club Meeting August 19

Catonsville Sunrise Rotary
Club meeting minutes 08/19/09

--Bill gave an inspiring Rotary minute about the Rotary/Dolly Parton Foundation that provides a book per month for kids from birth to age 5--in case anyone missed it last week

Announcements
--Rosemary announced Bill’s birthday and everyone sang to him. Then Rosemary presented him with farm fresh gifts.
--Cal passed out samples of the cool new Rotary promotional postcards that we will be using at future events. They look really nice.
--Cal announced that the race banner will be going up at CCBC very soon and encouraged all of us to get runners to make the event a success

Happy Dollars:
--George announced another new grandchild
--Rosemary happily announced that she was having a neighbor’s tree cut down today and there was speculation that the Judge would be trying the resulting court case about it in 6 months to a year
--Eric announced a successful 2 day camping trip to Rock Gap last weekend and thanked Jonathan for use of his air mattresses
--Joe announced that he has lost 16 pounds on his diet and everyone will see the results up close at the upcoming pool party
--Guest Richard Hiteshew told a story about how Allegany County and the State of MD sold an entire high school and the grounds for 5k. They sure are shrewd. Is it any wonder that there is a state budget shortfall?
--Perennial guest Alan Ray described what he had hoped was his moment of fame in an ALMOST unbelievable encounter at Dollyland in the Smokey Mountains.
--Bill thanked Rosemary for the gift and for remembering that he was now 35 years old
--Cal was happy that the Ravens crushed the Redskins 23-0 and that he watched it in person
--Bruce thanked last week’s band at FRF for being his best customers
--Joe announced a successful CCBC golf tourney
--Susan was “thrilled” that the fine and forgiving people of Philly saw their way clear to signing dog-lover Michael Vick as an Eagle. Boy, did anyone see that 60 minutes interview? He seemed a little coached to me.

Program:

George introduced local realtor and green energy advocate Kirbey Spencer who talked about the green power co-op where businesses and residents can buy clean wind power for their homes and businesses. She told us that wind power under the current agreement is actually cheaper than what BGE is currently charging for their “dirty” power. Amazing. She gave listeners several options for taking advantage of this environmentally friendly concept. She also discussed geo-thermal and solar power initiatives.

Doug won the 50/50 but did not win the big prize.

We had a good turnout of 14 members and three guests (Alan, Richard and Kirbey).

For those of you who have sent me some potential member names, I thank you.

Let’s keep the momentum and please remember to forward me three names each for potential membership.
