Club Meeting May 13
Catonsville Sunrise Rotary Club
Minutes May 13, 2009
Susan Souder greeted one and
all.
Cal Oren provided inspiration.
Susan Souder gave a World or
Rotary illustration.
The meeting was opened by the
President, Cal Oren.
11 members were present, no
guests.
Rotary Announcements:
Dictionary Project – Cal Oren
discussed distributions of
dictionaries at Baltimore
Highlands, Johnnycake and
upcoming events at North Bend
and Landsdowne Elementary
Schools.
5K Race Day – Steve Arum said
there would be a planning
meeting Wednesday at CCBC.
Frederick Road Fridays – These
events will begin June 19. The
Chamber of Commerce has approved
sale of water and soda by the
Rotary Club. Parking will be
available at Jennings Café.
Books and Burgers Report – The
used book event with cook out
last Saturday could have been
more successful. Construction on
the site left the cooking
equipment locked up inside a
construction fence. Book
proceeds were about $50.00.
Happy Dollars:
Brent Tolbert-Smith noted his
departure on Thursday for
Chicago to attend the graduation
of his youngest son from college
(B.A., audio arts, Columbia
College of Chicago).
Larry Aaronson announced the
birth of his fourth grandchild
and the recovery of a friend’s
son from a motorcycle accident
(welcome back Larry).
Rosemary Wright was pleased
with the wonderful job Jon
Zawacki’s painting crew did
rehabilitating her home and the
capture of a marauding squirrel.
Eric Lamb celebrated his
daughter’s first ballet recital.
Susan Souder celebrated the
graduation of her son Kyle from
college (congratulations Kyle).
New Business:
Secretary Post – The
resignation of Karen Paris due
to graduate study plans leaves
the club without an incoming
Secretary. Volunteers are
requested (minimal requirements,
of which literacy is not one).
Dictionary Project – A new
Coordinator will be needed next
year for the Dictionary Project.
Program: Steve Arum on his
recent trip to India
Steve and his wife Esther took
an extensive tour of north
central India, visiting Delhi,
Jaipur, Aggra and many other
sites. Noting a few facts about
India, Steve said India is
composed of 29 states, is the
world’s largest democracy and
has 7,000+ years of history. Its
population is 1,140,000,000
people. At the same time it has
the world’s largest middle class
and ¼ of the world’s poor and
is, he said, “a most unusual
country”. He recounted the
amusing story of how he and
Esther navigated a traffic
circle from a museum back to
their waiting car on the other
side of the circle and many
other tails. These were
accompanied by fascinating photo
slides the Arums took on their
trip, of which Steve was able to
share only a few.
50-50 ‘Don’t know who won the
drawing: Had to bug out.

Club Meeting May 27
Catonsville Sunrise Rotary Club
Minutes May 27, 2009
Ed Tolzman greeted one and all.
Brent Tolbert-Smith provided
inspiration.
Ed Tolzman gave a World of
Rotary illustration about a
Duluth-Superior Rotary Club on
the Wisconsin-Minnesota border
formed on the theme of the
environment..
The meeting was opened by the
President, Cal Oren.
10 members were present; Charter
Guest Alan Ray was present.
Happy Dollars:
Brent Tolbert-Smith celebrated
the graduation of his youngest
son Aaron from college in
Chicago, which he attended, the
Blue Man group performance he
also attended, the Garrison
Keillor show he saw at Wolf Trap
and the end of school.
George Brookhart celebrated
his grandson’s graduation from
UMBC and the arrival of colorful
African fabric from members of
an African Rotary (Nigeria?)
that visited last year. I think
George will take orders.
Alan Ray spoke of the Portland
family trip he took (where he
was sunburned!).
Bruce Vandervort plugged the
Lithuanian Festival in
Catonsville Saturday and Sunday,
with music, dancing, beer (I had
bears – maybe bears too?) for
$3.00.
Cal Oren anticipated his
weekend journey to California to
attend the wedding of his
83-year-old mother-in-law, who
was marrying an old beau she
dated over 60 years ago (the
couples remained friends the
whole time).
Susan Souder celebrated the 83
years of marriage of a banker,
preacher, funeral director.
Business:
• Financial – Treasurer Bruce
Vandervort said $3,000 in
District and National dues would
go out soon. The new budget will
be published soon as well. The
Rotary Foundation has $15,000,
including set asides for 5K race
expenses.
• Book Festival – George
Brookhart will be liaison next
year to the Library for this
event. One idea is possibly for
the Club to assume control over
the Saturday used book sale at
Sam’s Club, while continuing to
help out on the Friday Author’s
Night.
• 5K Race – Joe Loverde is
heading efforts to obtain
sponsorships, with a goal of
$15,000. Sponsorships totaling
$5,000 have been found so far.
Steve Arum coordinates race day
activities. Cal Oren is handling
marketing/publicity.
• Guest Bartending – Dimitri’s,
Thursday night, 5:30 to 9:00
p.m. (or whenever the bar closes
for more intemperate members).
Benefit to Wounded Warriors,
with the bartending help of the
Nam Nights, a law enforcement
and Vietnam veterans biker club.
• Frederick Road Fridays –
Sign-up sheets for participation
in water/soda sales at this
summer event will soon be out.
In addition to sale proceeds,
this should also publicize
Rotary.
• Dictionary Project – The
project needs a coordinator for
the coming year. Huntington
Learning Center again will
sponsor (i.e., pay for the
dictionaries). This year’s
experience shows that we need to
start early to arrange
distribution dates with schools.
• District Grant – Cal Oren is
heading efforts to find a club
project that will qualify for a
District Grant (the joint
project with the Bani, Dominican
Republic Rotary qualified for a
grant last year). Possibilities
are CEFM eviction assistance and
the Samaritan Women community
garden.
50-50 – Ed Tolzman won the
drawing
