Speaker: Eric Lamb, Attorney, Classification Talk

Eric is one of our newest members, but one who has been most successful and persistent in bringing us new members. He was born in Frederick, Maryland, where he grew up. He attended the University of Colorado, Boulder and graduated from Mt. Saint Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Md. And University of Baltimore School of Law.

He worked as an attorney on Capitol Hill in Washington and in real estate for a law firm in Baltimore. He opened a law office and title company in Catonsville in 1997. With hard work and long hours, the title company’s business spread to 26 states.

Eric has lived in several homes in the area, including Holmehurst Avenue, Catonsville in 1999, Severena Park (a couple of times, I think), Hilton Avenue and most recently Montrose Avenue in 2006. He and his wife have 3 children.

Eric recently sold his title company (before the crash) and now works in a law office in Catonsville in estate planning.

50-50: Susan Souder won the drawing.

Speaker: Joe Harsel of Erickson Communities on “Corporate Philanthropy”

Mr. Harsel is Director of Corporate Responsibility for Erickson. He has a degree from James Madison University and a M.A. in Leadership Development. Erickson has 23 retirement communities across the country.

Mr. Harsel defined “corporate citizenship” in short as “doing well by doing good”. it includes, operational practices, community engagement and stockholder relations.

In pursuit of it, he asks the following questions:
1. What is the biggest need?
2. Who are your stakeholders (constituents)?
3. What are its needs?
4. What can your organization contribute (its greatest strength)?
5. What can you do?

50-50: Bill Lorenz won the drawing.

Board Meeting December 15

Catonsville Sunrise Rotary Board Meeting, December 15, 2008

Cal Oren, Joe Loverde, Bruce Vandervort and Eric Lamb were present.

The Treasurer made a report, including discussion of some funds due from 5K sponsors that will be paid through the St. Agnes Foundation. Seven members owe dues. The club is presently in the black.

Inactive member Bev Wright has expressed the intention to become an active member if a newly hired sales representative can stand in for her on some occasions.

New officers to be nominated include Karen Paris for Secretary (I second that!) and Jonathan Zawacki for Treasurer fo4 2009-10. The sentiment was expressed that it is good to have some relatively new members step up to serve as officers.

Induction of up to 5 new members will be held Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Monday afternoon, Dec. 15 is scheduled for distributing dictionaries to another school.

Discussion occurred on assembly of a database of names and addresses of past contacts from bull roast and financial records.

Discussion took place concerning the possibility of involving Erickson Retirement Communities, and especially Charlestown itself, in Rotary activities, ranging from meeting location to new members to fund raising sponsorships.

Discussion also took place concerning future focal points for 5K races, including Matthews 1600 (the prior location) and CCBC, as well as the need to seek large corporate sponsors active in business in our area.

The meeting was adjourned.

Mark Silvestri Dave Weathington

Congratulations to all, with hopes of the start of a long, beautiful relationship (with apologies to “Casa Blanca”).

Club Meeting:

• Meetings – No club meetings on December 24 and 31st, but members can meet for breakfast informally at 8:00 a.m. on December 31 at the Double-T Diner.
• 2009-10 Club Officers – Nominees by the club board are Cal Oren, President; Joe Loverde, Vice-President; Karen Paris, Secretary; Jonathan Zawacki, Treasurer
• Motion: To accept the nominees of the board for officers for 2009-10 was seconded and passed unanimously (Here’s to July 1!).
• Treasurer’s Report – The club has money in the bank (a little), money from two sponsors of the 5K Race still expected and dues coming in.
• Meeting Places: Charlestown. Plans are underway to forge a closer relationship with the Erickson retirement community at Charlestown in Catonsville. Although Erickson’s headquarters is located in Catonsville, association specifically with Charlestown is seen as most appropriate for our local club, which might even include regular club meetings held on the premises. The club did hold a regular meeting at Charlestown a couple of years ago.
• 5K Race – Possible race venues were discussed, including Matthews 1600 and the Community College of Baltimore County (Catonsville), CCBC.
• Motion – Rosemary Wright made a motion to designate the $600 she recently presented the club from Wells-Fargo to be used to purchase a cow for the Bani (Dominican Republic) Rotary Club (our partner club in the Dominican Republic) to be donated to a deserving rural community near Bani as part of the Bani Rotary livestock project. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously, after some discussion.

50-50: Russ Witzke won the drawing.
