Club Meeting October 1
ROTARY CLUB MINUTES, Catonsville
Sunrise – October 1, 2008
Richard Hiteshew was greeter
George Brookhart gave an
inspiration. And Rotary Moment
concerning our efforts on behalf
of the recent 5K Fitness race.
Pres. Cal Oren opened the
meeting.
Guests were Jean Allert, a
recent speaker and mother of the
day’s speaker.
12 Members were present
Rotary Announcements:
-
Bruce VanderVort reported
that runner money proceeds
from the 5K race would range
between $1,000 and $3,000.
There were 806 registered
runners, including 100 on a
very rainy race day,
including “sleep walkers”.
He expected the total raised
would approach $30,000. A
tribute was made to Bruce
Siddons for his outstanding
efforts in organizing the
race.
-
Joe Loverde talked about
plans for this year’s Bull
Roast. He said Martin’s West
was offering a 20% discount
and elimination of banquet
“extras”, which would bring
the cost down to $40-$42 per
plate. While we made no
money on the past Bull Roast
due to the economic
downturn, he felt that
$20-$25,000 was a reasonable
goal for this year. There is
a big need to get sponsors
and sell tickets. Joe said
that Richard Hiteshew should
chair the Bull Roast effort,
with a lot of help from
Rotarians and others.
Happy Dollars:
-
Bruce Siddons gave dollars
in appreciation of Joe
Loverde’s help on the 5K
race.
-
Sherry Welch gave dollars in
regret for being ill on race
day Saturday and for St.
Agnes Hospital’s
appreciation of Rotary
efforts for the cancer
center and the community.
-
Jonathan Zawacky gave
dollars in appreciation of
the race, a fun time for all
in spite (or partially
because of?) the rain. Also,
his son Mark won athlete of
the week for 5 touchdowns he
made in a game for his
school.
-
Richard Hiteshew gave
dollars for Harry Eck, a
neighbor and past member,
who sent his regards (Harry
is suffering from macular
degeneration of the eyes). A
21” catfish was found in
Harry’s backyard pond.
Richard also spoke about the
high-end car show on the
Eastern Shore recently that
netted $425,000 for the Red
Cross.
-
Joe Loverde gave dollars for
the return of his physician
neighbor from a tour of duty
in Iraq.
Speaker: Erin Simia
Miss Simia (are there still
“Misses”?), who is 17, spoke
about her year in Brazil in a
small mountain town as an
exchange student. She attended a
public school there and made
many friends, in spite of her
lack of facility in Portuguese.
She discussed outings and her
activities during the year,
showing slides on a lap top
computer. She also wore a jacket
adorned with lots of “bling”,
medals and pins from the
students from many countries who
were also exchange students she
met while in Brazil.
50-50 Drawing: Bruce Vandervort
won the drawing.
The meeting was closed by Pres.
Cal Oren
Addendum to Minutes for
September 24: Rosemary Wright
tells me to be sure to let you
know that the $300 in donation
to a charity of one’s choice in
a reverse mortgage settlement by
her employer, Wells-Fargo, comes
out of the Wells-Fargo proceeds,
not the costs of the homeowner
(And of course you know that
Warren Buffet is the largest
shareholder in Wells-Fargo, who
is the only man on Wall Street
with any standing in my book,
but of course he operates out of
Omaha).
