Speaker: Ned Carey:
Deputy Executive Director,
Maryland Aviation Commission
Director Carey was born,
raised and still lives (same
house) in Brooklyn Park,
Md. He has worked for the
Aviation Commission for 19
years and is a former
president of the Anne
Arundel Co. School Board,
among many other honors and
voluntary positions.
The Commission owns and
operates
Baltimore-Washington
International Airport (BWI)
with 500 employees at the
airport. It is one of four
airports owned by states in
the United States and is a
major economic engine in the
state of Maryland. It also
owns and operates Martin
Airport in Middle River,
built by Glenn L. Martin the
aircraft builder.
The Commission licenses
airports in Maryland. BWI
is the 25th
busiest in the U.S., with 70
destinations and 11,000
total employees. It is
favorably located some 25
miles from Washington, D.C.,
the same as Dulles
International, and has rail
access to MARC and Amtrak.
On-time performance at the
airport is #1 in the
Northeast. 22,000 jobs are
directly or indirectly
operated to the operation of
the airport, which has $1.9
billion in annual revenue
and pays $132 in Maryland
taxes.
The airport is following
a “developer model” to
renovate its retail shopping
area, with stores featuring
“street prices”, rather than
premium prices. There are
9,000 parking spaces in the
terminal.

Board
Meeting May 15
President George
Brookhart cheerfully
called the meeting to
Order with Richard
Hiteshew, Bruce
VanDervort, Cal Oren,
Brent Tolbert-Smith and
Susan Souder in
attendance.
Bani Project -
Bruce V presented an
update. M/S/P submission
of Application for A
District Simplified
Grant for providing a
Classroom for the
Daughters of the
Altagracia Home for
Girls in Bani, Dominican
Republic. Bruce did an
outstanding job putting
together this paper
work. Copies available
if you are interested.
Book Festival -
Final numbers are not
yet available from the
Friends of the Library.
The Board was very
pleased that Sam's Club
had sold additional
books after our used
book sale as customers
continued to express
interest in the books in
the bins near the exit.
Secretary's Report
- The transition from
Susan to Brent is
expected to go very
smoothly. They will look
at the Club's By-laws to
determine whether an
update is needed.
Treasurer's Report
- Richard reported that
we have money.
Statements were not yet
available. Dues are
being paid. Our Rotary
International and
District dues are due
July 1 and we expect to
pay them by August 1, or
so.
Assistant
Treasurer/T-Elect Bruce
is meeting with Larry
Haynes to take over for
Richard. Bruce will
present a proposed
budget at our next Club
Business meeting, which
will be Wednesday, May
28, 2008. (Club business
is conducted on the
fourth Wednesday of
every month.)
In addition, there was a
discussion of the
results of the 2008 Bull
Roast, and possible
opportunities for the
2009 Bull Roast.
Dictionary Project
- All dictionaries which
we currently possess
have been paid for by
donations and other
serendipitous
occurrences.
Transition (much on
the President's mind):
In the normal course of
events, we could conduct
a swearing in of new
officers at the Club
Business meeting on June
25, 2008 (swear in
first, swear at later)
BUT President-Elect Oren
will be out of town. A
speaker is already
scheduled for July 2. It
appears that we could
have install new
officers and have our
annual awards ceremony
on July 9 because I
don't see a speaker
already scheduled on
that date. PE Cal will
be meeting with VP/PE
Joe to discuss future
programs.
5K - The Board is
extremely impressed with
the excellent
preparations underway by
able Chair Bruce Siddens.
Bruce reports that Peter
is being extremely
helpful. A contract has
been signed with a
company to manage the
race. The St. Agnes
Foundation has
generously agreed to
loan funds for the
pre-race costs.
Membership: The
Board is delighted with
the enthusiastic efforts
of new member Eric Lamb.
Several Board members
expressed an intention
to be more helpful to
Eric in this excellent
endeavor.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Souder
(Looking forward to
being Past)

Speaker: Dr. John Singer
Dr. singer retired as a surgeon
from St. Agnes Hospital in 2005
after 30 years of service
there. He is on the Board of
the St. Agnes Foundation. Since
that time, he has been a
volunteer and Director of Hands
Across the Americas, a private
international organization,
performing medical work in
Colombia.
Dr. Singer’s work in Colombia
has been to a public hospital in
Agua Blanco, a poor section of
Calli, the third largest city in
Colombia. This neighborhood is
home to 750,000 people,
virtually all of whom are
desperately poor. The hospital
has operated for five years.
Initially offering only
outpatient services, it now has
20 inpatient beds. Military
police must escort Dr. Singer
and other foreign medical aid
workers to and from the hospital
due to the danger of kidnapping
by rebels operating in the
area. The hospital cares for
uninsured patients. Up to 3750
patients are seen in a day.
Working at the hospital in
week-long sessions, Dr. Singer
and his team have seen as many
as 3750 patients in a single
day. Dr. Singer has performed
43 operations in a single 6-day
period. Hands Across the
Americas has 3 missions to Calli
this year. Its single yearly
fundraiser will be November 27.
Operations now offered at the
hospital include breast
biopsies, hernia, thyroid, gall
bladder and hysterectomies.
Coordination of the medical
operations is made through Dr.
Sardi of Mercy Hospital in
Baltimore, whose family still
lives in Calli.
Larry Aaronson won the 50-50
drawing.
