Board Meeting November 20

President George Brookhart called the meeting to Order. Richard, Joe, Bruce V., Cal and Susan were in attendance.

Treasurer’s Report:  The Club expects to receive approximately $9,000 in proceeds for the 5K race from St. Agnes. We intend to split it evenly between the YMCA and our Foundation after reimbursement to our Club for expenses necessitated by the YMCA’s failure to supply volunteers nor to provide the assistance it promised. The check for the YMCA will be sent to the Central YMCA, as identified on the flyer for the 5K.  Our Club raised another $825 for the Foundation ourselves.

The Foundation has accomplished the goal set by President B. – the beginning of an endowment, that is $5,000 in a CD.

The Club’s account at Chesapeake Bank will be closed. All accounts will be in Wachovia Bank.

Bull Roast -  Chairman Richard reported that we already have 45 items for the greatest Silent Auction in the area. He is now taking reservations for tables.  Preparations for the Bull Roast are proceeding. Expenses are being incurred.

Vocational Lane – Chairman Cal reported that he is searching for another project like The Dictionary Project. He met recently with the Principal of Catonsville High School. She suggested that we consider sponsoring assignment books for the upper classes. At present, Baltimore County middle school students and 9th graders are provided assignment books to record all homework and projects. There was a lack of enthusiasm for this expensive project - $4 per book. We would be able to have our logo and information on the back cover. The books are reviewed by many parents.

Dictionary Project – Sam’s Club has been provided with the 501(c)3 info for the national The Dictionary Project so that we can buy the remaining dictionaries needed for distribution.  Distribution at North Bend Elem. school went well;  this school was a new one for us.

Mock interviews at Catonsville High school went well.

International Lane -  Chairman Bruce V. updated us on the latest report from Bani circulating an e mail from Martin. We expect $500 from Sam’s Club; and we expect another $500 from different sources. Due to recent damage from Hurricane Noel, the Board approved $100 to send for relief. Bruce has also generously donated $100 personally. We hope to raise some additional funds.  The bridge to Santo Domingo was washed out.

5K – George contacted the race management companies.   He doesn’t think we can manage the race without a management company. Joe and Richard met recently with a UMBC fraternity interested in helping the community. The fraternity is interested in day of the event help. The 5K and The Children’s Home trail project came to mind.

Next Board meeting – we will discuss Bruce’s excellent summary of our donations and fundraising expectations for 2008.

Membership – More guests need to be invited to see for themselves how swell we are. One new member each would double the size of our Club. Imagine that?!

Speaker Schedule – We are scheduled through January.  The Bonds Meadow Club has offered to speak to us about Safe Motherhood Kits they are raising money to send to Africa.

We need to check to see whether there is an Unwanted Gift Auction on the January schedule.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Souder
Secretary

Speaker:  Keith Meisel, Editor, Catonsville Times

Mr. Meisel reviewed the state of newspaper readership in the United States, which is generally declining.  33% of a key demographic group now read daily newspapers and only 22% of those under 30 years of age.  Computer availability of news is a big reason for the drop. Mr. Meisel still follows the goals of truth and objectivity in gathering the news.  He said the amount of stories published in the Catonsville Times depended on the number of pages available, which in turn depended on the amount of advertising sold for the paper.  The cost of subscriptions basically just covers the cost of postage to mail the papers.  There are 8 newspapers in the Times’ chain.  The Catonsville Times itself has a circulation of under 8,000.  He discussed the issue of paid subscription versus free distribution and availability on the internet.  Deadlines for notices for the paper are two weeks ahead of time.  Susan Souder opined that many people like to read stories about the courts and crime, even if they do not involve local residents.  Rick Martel also expressed the opinion that people are also interested in news stories from a broader area than just Catonsville.

50-50 Drawing:   Susan Souder won the drawing.

The meeting was closed by President George Brookhart.

Happy Thanksgiving, folks!
