Club Meeting June 6th

Our accomplished President George Brookhart called the meeting to order. John Monck offered the Devotion.

GUEST:  Matthew Spence, a real estate broker, who also belongs to RRGC, was our guest.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  July 4, 2007 meeting is CANCELLED.

Our Club is sponsoring a girls softball team. Russ showed us how cool our logo looks on the team shirts.

Rotary Club of Howard County is sponsoring a Boat Float at Columbia’s 40th Anniversary Celebration. I haven’t heard from them; guess I didn’t win the 50/50.

Everyone is urged to check out our wonderful Web site which is updated regularly.

Tom Medicus is riding to benefit C.O.P.S. which supports the families of fallen officers.

HAPPY DOLLARS:  Larry A. remembered the late Cong. Parren Mitchell who founded the SBA minority program among other accomplishments including locating the SSA in Woodlawn.

Alan also recalled the many accomplishments of Cong. Mitchell who will be missed because he got things done.

Tom was happy that he when he got a 3:30 AM call from his daughter who was stranded in WV with a broken car he was able to diagnose the problem and get her moving again. Tom was proud to relate that his grandson has a certain talent of performing, most recently as one of the infamous Blues Brothers.

Bruce S. was happy to tell us about a recent family fishing trip in which Darby, age 11, caught 3 stripers. Sales and profits are increasing at Sam’s Club.

Joe advises that the 10/20 Fall Dance to benefit the CCBC Foundation is 75 % sold out in 6 weeks. They are on target to raise $25,000. Last Saturday in Essex, Joe attended a Buddy Deane reunion dance.

George is happy that his granddaughter is attending Senior Week in OC; and that George doesn’t have to worry like his daughter does!

SPEAKER:  Richard Hiteshew introduced our speaker, Richard Jester, Principal of Western School of Technology and Environment. Jester lives in BelAir.

Western is one of the wonderful secrets of Catonsville. It’s a magnet school rated in the top 5 of the high schools in Baltimore County.  All students are required to take 2 years of a foreign language.  There is a diverse student population of which 63% take the SAT.

There are 11 different programs, some of which are more popular than others:  Automotive Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts & Restaurant Management, Environmental Services, Environmental Technology, Graphic & Printing Communications, Health Science Technology, Information Systems, Information Systems Technology, Mechanical Construction, and something else.

50/50: There was a winner!

Respectfully submitted,
Secretary Susan

Club Meeting June 20th

Our  President George Brookhart called the meeting to order.  Brent offered words of inspiration concisely.

GUESTS:

Frank Coleric (sp?) – League of Dreams

Keith Meisel – Editor Catonsville Times and Catonsville native

Wayne McDowell – Gutters, downspouts (not chimneys)

Gail Lee – The Children’s Home, Director of Development, mentioned the new Building and Diagnostic Center under construction

Andre Cooper – CEO, The Children’s Home, reminded us that they serve individuals throughout Maryland ages 8 – 21

Jim Lister, Executive Director of the Catonsville Chamber of Commerce

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Next week we will have an election and induction of new officers for 2007 -08.

HAPPY DOLLARS:

Brent - $1 for large log sculpture on Hilton Avenue, $1 for whimsical trip to the beach for a few days with Manfei, $1 his soldier son continues to do well in Fallujah

Alan - $1 for the great success of the (humorous) cardboard boat float in Columbia sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Howard County, $1 for his son’s film editing job for Top Chef on Bravo

Larry - $1 for spiffy new Enterprise Institute brochure which he distributed (I think he likes having his name on the front so that it looks like he does something for a living), $1 for the Maryland taxpayers sending him to FL

George $1 for avoiding a DUI charge while driving the beverage cart for the St. Agnes Foundation golf tournament, $1 for a great Father’s Day with all of 5 of his grandchildren

Joe - $1 for Richard Hiteshew’s birthday, $1 for last Wednesday’s Westside Shelter dinner serving 81 (in the pouring rain)

Cal – TWO GOLD DOLLARS  - 1 for Richard’s party at which the police arrived due to a neighbor’s complaint (all of the boys were so proud), $1 because it was June 19 before he turned on the A/c for the first time

George explained that Happy Dollars and 50/50 earnings support some of our smaller, regular contributions such as to the After Prom Party at Catonsville High School and an office refrigerator for Casey Cares Foundation

SPEAKER: Sherry Welch introduced Bonnie Phipps, CEO of St. Agnes Hospital.  Referencing the location of Café On The Grove, Bonnie told us it was her first visit. She grew up near  Memorial Stadium. Her mother used to say to Bonnie and her twin brother Bruce (who is a judge) “You kids are going to sent me to Spring Grove!” And, there is where Bonnie ended up early on a Wednesday morning. Bonnie said she was familiar with the Rotary in Atlanta.

Bonnie described for us what’s happening at St. Agnes including a $212 million renovation and improvement project.  She spoke of the significant growth trend in and challenges facing health care.  47 million people in the US have no health insurance.  The average age of nurses in the US is 53.  She touched on implant and drug costs, pharmaceutical advertising, and other related subjects. Many interesting statistics were related.

50/50: Winner - Bruce Siddens who did not select the Nine of Clubs.

Club Meeting June 27th

Our President George Brookhart (formerly known as “Cubby” to some) called the meeting to order.  Rick Martel enthusiastically greeted all comers.  George also offered a Devotion.

GUESTS: One briefly wandered in but discovered she was at the wrong meeting and hurried out. We’ll have to try harder to snare the next one.

HAPPY DOLLARS:  Steve and Ester returned from China after spending time with their daughter’s new in-laws. Steve related a story of looking for an Internet Café and having someone volunteer to show them most hospitably. Steve agreed to speak to the Club about more of his travel experiences.

George was happy to remind us about the Lurman Woodland Theater presentation of the Mahoney Brothers on 7/8. There will be an auto show from 4 – 6. George is a sponsor.

Richard, looking spiffy in a red Rotary shirt, is happy that Villa Julie College boards students attending summer school – his son is there.

Rick Martel was happy remembering a recent trip to Disney World with 4 of his children. His son Patrick plays the guitar in a band called Off Limits. There could have been others.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Richard announced that we received a thank-you letter from The Children’s Home for a contribution. We also received a letter from the IRS confirming our 501c3 status for the Foundation.  The Celebrations Committee is looking for more people to serve as parade marshals.

NEW BUSINESS:  M/S/P to spend under $200 for a table for the Casey Cares Foundation in Arbutus that lost everything in a fire.

BUSINESS MEETING

  1. The 2007-2008 Officers were introduced – George as President, Joe as VP, Richard as Treasurer (going on 6 years!) and SS as Secretary.

  2. The Officers nominated were elected.

  3. Alan Ray inducted the “new” Officers (one new officer – Joe and 3 recycled officers!)

  4. George presented the Officers with groovy little Rotary pins reflecting their important positions.

  5. Richard presented the Rotarian of the year – a Paul Harris Fellowship – to CAL OREN for all of his work on the Dictionary Project and other vocational projects as well as his being a Charter member and helping all of us all of the time do all kinds of stuff. (Richard was more eloquent.)

  6. George presented PERFECT attendance awards to several of us. Our Club has a policy that attendance at any Rotary event counts toward the 50% requirement.

  7. Maggie Schorr from Friends of The Catonsville Library thanked us for the contribution to the Library door and its automatic function. The Catonsville Library is the second busiest in the county. She is looking for ideas for landscaping for the long wall at the Library which gets a lot of sun.

  8. John Monck provided an update on the Catonsville Emergency Food Ministry and its recent accomplishments. Since we first became involved CEFM is much more stable. The Van we purchased was a huge help. The move from the Church basement to the rented space to the new Bloomsbury building is an excellent place from which to serve folks in need. CEFM is developing a Strategic Plan for going forward. The Rotary Bull Roast provided 20% of the CEFM’s funding in the past; this past year, our contribution represented 35% of the CEFM’s budget.

  9. Cal discussed the Dictionary project which has become a signature project for the Club. Everyone is encouraged to participate in distributing the books. We visited 10 schools this year and gave out 900 books. The books cost $1.47 each. They have been well-received. We provide packets to the third grade teachers with suggested lesson plans. The Project has become easier with the regular contact with the schools. We also send a brochure to the parents. This past year Huntington Learning Center provided funding for the entire project. They have been a good partner.

50/50:  Larry Aaronson was the big winner but didn’t select the 9 of Clubs.

Finally submitted,
Susan Souder,
Secretary
