Board Meeting February 20

Our intrepid President George called the meeting to order at the Café On The Grove.

Treasurer’s Report:  Richard reported that the Club has approximately $1500.  The Foundation has about $20,000 much of which is Bull roast $ and with $5,000 having been paid to Martin’s.

BULL ROAST:  Richard reports that the face value of the Silent Auction stuff is about $17,000. Let’s get people there to buy it! Friday night, Richard will need help to load the Silent Auction stuff, decorations, signs, posters, etc. People with big vehicles and strong backs are needed. The stuff can be delivered to Martin’s Saturday morning as early as 10 AM.  The Rotary banners should be loaded into Richard’s car tomorrow.

John Galley will check re clips from Coldwell Banker.  Richard will email Susan the script/time-line for the event unless another member would like to volunteer to emcee. Cal has printed/copied the programs which are folded.

Volunteers are needed to work the Registration table, to help set up, to take down, and to work the Silent Auction.

President’s Report:  There was a general discussion of recruiting members to succeed us as club officers.  We do not have a VP or a President-Elect at present. Bruce has agreed to take up Programming through 7/1/07 to help.

We sent flowers to Peter Sonntag and family for the birth of his first child. We received a thank-you note from Pat Kasuda for the flowers sent on account of her husband John’s illness.

At the next Visitors Day we will try to have a Power Point presentation. John Monck, please bring the CD with the Power Point to the meeting.

WEB site:  members are asked to provide photos and bios as set forth in the email from Chris listing the ones which are missing.

Membership:  We have 23 members, including Loverde and Tolzman.  We have the package to induct Sherry Welch, which may occur tomorrow. Steve Dare is dropping out of our Club as he is selling his business in Catonsville effective 4/1. He has been working in Silver Spring and plans to join a club closer to his home in Severna Park.

Dictionary Project:  We received thank-you letters from Arbutus Elementary School. Cal will try to arrange an exhibit of them for the Bull Roast. They are precious, as usual. The last school we had planned to give dictionaries received them from another Rotary Club.  As a result, we’ll donate 50 dictionaries to The Children’s Home.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Souder

Club Meeting February 21

Our Dynamic President George Brookhart called the meeting to order.  Dawn offered an inspiring prayer.

GUESTS: Joyce Glandin and Cindy Loverde were our guests again. Mike Mohler of Whalen Properties also visited. (He’ll give us an update on The Promenade Project on 4/11/07).

PRESIDENT’S REPORT:  The Treasurer reported that we have a large number of flashlights with our logo purchased for speakers. We do not want the batteries to go dead. The Board voted to donate them to guests of the Club.

We received a thank-you letter from Catonsville High School for our $100 contribution to the After School prom.  Rotary District Governor Pat Kasuda also sent our Club a thank-you letter  in appreciation for our flowers sent on account of her husband’s illness.

MARCH 29, 2007 will be mock interviews at Catonsville High School. Volunteers are needed to help George and Sherry Welch gives these students practice applying for jobs.

John Jacob of Boy Scout Troop 456 has asked that we permit a new group forming called the Venture Club assist us in community service on a project. (They would have been helpful at the Bull Roast!) We will stay in contact with John to learn more about this opportunity.

BULL ROAST 2007 – Chairman Richard reported that the stated value of all our fabulous Silent Auction items could be over $20,000.  Only tickets for which payments has been received will be at Will Call. No unpaid tickets for Will Call. There will be tickets at the door.

The drawing for the 32 inch HD TV/DVD Door prize will be about 3:30 or 4 PM. FRIDAY night everything has to be loaded and then moved Saturday morning. Volunteers with SUVs and trucks were obtained. We can get into Martin’s Sat. at 10 AM.

INDUCTION:  Sherry Welch was inducted as our newest member.

HAPPY DOLLARS:  Tom Medicus got a black eye, ripped up his shoulders and otherwise bruised his old ego playing with his grandson on the most recent visit. But he is secretly practicing on a newly acquired PlayStation 2.

Susan was happy to noted that movie star Matthew McConaughey was once a Rotary Youth Exchange student a/c to the Rotarian Magazine. She was also happy to have seen the musical Wicked at the Hippodrome.

Joe Loverde was happy that a skilled real estate agent (whose initials are GB) sold his mother’s house without even listing it and he was able to move her to Brightview.  Joe is looking forward to seeing his granddaughter Jessica acting in Cinderella in Colorado.

Mike Mohler is happy to be the Coach of the Girls Basketball team at Catonsville High School which is ranked 11th by the Sun. He asked for contributions to help fund the Team’s annual awards banquet.

Cal was $20 worth of happy that he was the lucky recipient of extra office supplies of Richard’s (ink cartridges). He recently had a terrific trip to LA and saw a special exhibit at the Getty of icons from St. Catherine’s Monastery in the desert.

Steve Arum was delighted to have attended the wedding of one of his twin daughters.

Sherry offered $2, one of which was to tell us about the St. Agnes Foundation Gala scheduled for 3/24/07at M & T Stadium. There will be great food, a band, and Silent Auction.  For the second dollar, she noted that her late husband had suffered from polio as a child and later, as an adult, he again experienced symptoms. She was happy to note the tremendous progress described in the recent Rotary Foundation report, i.e., there were only 4 countries left with the polio virus.

Brent donated $3 and gave us greetings for the Chinese New Year, which is the Year of the Pig. He also described doing a lot of work to get the farm ready for cold weather and then enjoying the recent snow fall.  Third, Brent’s son Colin is headed for the Indian Head Naval Station where he will be training in explosives before the Army sends him to Kuwait, and then to Iraq at 3/12, as an Electronics Warfare Officer as part of the President’s “Temporary Augmentation.”

Reggie thanked all who attended her Arbutus store’s recent jewelry sale to benefit the Soroptimists.  The Arbutus store will be selling tickets to the Women’s Expo at CCBC at Catonsville on March 10 – 11, 2007.

SPEAKER:  Scott Jeffrey of CCBC presented a program via power point entitled “Mapping The Way,” a new degree program in Geospatial Applications, which are uses for geographic information systems (GIS). Mapquest and Google Earth are lay applications of GIS. GIS integrates data and map and satellite imagery. He gave us several examples of the used of GIS – the World Health Organization has used GIS to track avian flu; the Maryland Poison Center has used it to track incidents for the Mr. Yuk Program; criminal justice organizations have used statistics to map crimes to direct police attention; businesses such as real estate have used the info to see for how much houses have sold in various neighborhoods, to determine where to locate new businesses; environmental science such as CDF have used GIS for tracking toxic monitoring sites, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation has used the technology for mapping certain plant and animal life.

Other uses were described such as community services, engineering applications, transportation planning, medical services like emergency uses, government and politics – red & blue states.

Geospatial Technology was recently noted by the President as being one of twelve high growth fields in the domestic economy. The US Department of Labor estimates 208,000 jobs being added in the area from 2002 – 2012. Community colleges have been identified as the best place to develop the field. Mr. Jeffrey was an informative speaker.

50/50 – Lucky Reggie won the drawing.

Susan Souder

Club Meeting February 28th

Our Reality President George Brookhart called the meeting to Order.  Cal Oren provided the Devotion.

GUESTS:  Bruce Siddens of Sam’s, visited again, and brought an application for membership. (don’t forget to vote)

Nancy Myer of CCBC visited again to promote attendance at the upcoming Women’s Exposition.

Ron Garman of Columbia Black Hawk Company produces films including training videos.

Joyce Glandon also visited us again and she has expressed interest in joining.

Rosemary Wright, a Wells Fargo reverse mortgage specialist who works in Greenbelt, told us that she is looking for a group just like ours.

Attorney Joel Carpenter also visited for the first time.

Newly employed David Schwartz, Catonsville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, visited us for the first time.

Vintage Alan Ray again bestowed his visage upon us.

Happy Dollars:  Loquacious Larry Aaronson praised Bull Chairman Richard, noting that unlike those posting messages on our Rotary email chat room,  Larry was also happy that his granddaughter ate a lot. He also bragged about being the only man on the all female Board of the Women’s Expo.

Cal also offered praise for Richard’s Herculean efforts and he invited all of the members to follow suit, which we did and did many of our guests.

Richard received a hearty round of applause as well.

Dawn offered $2 of gratitude that last Thursday night the 40 foot tree that fell down at her place, missed her house, all of the cars and the other trees.

Joe offered $2 to announce that his mother’s house would settle that day after having been sold only 30 days ago thanks to a talented agent (GB).

He was also relieved, like many of us, that the Senator Theater avoided (again) foreclosure.

Richard reported that his wife Toni was please with the flowers the Club sent to her for her tremendous contribution to the Bull Roast Silent Auction.

Richard expressed great appreciation to Toni and to his partner John who covered for Richard’s substantial contribution of hundreds of hours.

On behalf of all of us, Richard acknowledged the efforts of SubChairman of Sponsorships Russ for securing CORPORATE SPONSORS who made organizing the event easier;  new Member Ed Tolzman who provided a lot of assistance mailing hundreds of invites, etc., newer Member Joe Loverde for selling 90 tickets and Charter Member George for selling 70 tickets, and since we were running out of time, he summed it up saying, "Everyone in the Club helped!"

Susan was happy that she had moved IRA $ out of the market (before the recent fall).

Guest Ron Garman was $1 happy because the first speeding ticket (he claimed it was the first in “years” – maybe 2?!) resulted in a NOT guilty verdict when he followed the sage advice of an attorney and got a nice judge.

BULL ROAST:  Chairman Richard reported that subject to final adjustments, $23,000 was raised. (1% is for the Club’s administrative expenses?)

Attendance has increased every year since our first year – about 540 this year, last year 379.  The amount raised has dramatically increased every year - $8 – 9,000 the first year, to $11,000, last year was about $16,000 and then this year’s $23,000. Our goal next year will be 700 attendees and raising $30,000. The amount spent on Silent Auction items (items including packages of items) has increased from $50, to $70 and this year was about $150. On the day of the event, Richard had additional tables set up because of the “walk-up business.”  The Silent Auction items were all entirely contributed. The amount of money earned from the sale of Silent Auction items demonstrates the importance of getting lots of people to attend. Richard will let us know more about this event as everything is finalized.  Richard also suggested that rather than a formal Post Mortem meeting that everyone communicate comments by email – what was good about the event, and what could be improved.

Richard also provided an update on the status of the Catonsville Emergency Food Ministries’ request for a grant to buy its building. Baltimore County has denied the grant. CEFM was encouraged to apply again. No explanation for the denial was forthcoming.

Treasurer’s Report:  The Club has about $1500.  the Foundation has a lot of 4, much of which is Bull Roast proceeds.

President’s Report:  The latest Speaker’s List was circulated (and was sent by email).  Bruce Vandervort will handle schedule until July when the new VP will take over this responsibility.  Bruce reported that we are fairly booked until the end of June.

In addition to Speakers, the Club’s schedule notes a Greeter and a Devotion person for each meeting. George is kind enough to include these designations on each week’s agenda which he sends by email before each meeting. Whenever you are designated, but unable to attend, please arrange for a substitute.

That Wild and Crazy Bruce has also included the popular Hawaiian shirt day for late May and brought back the popular door prizes for attending

Club business meetings (we would tell you they are always on the fourth Wednesday of the month but we wouldn’t want you to schedule something else those days)

Maryland Lottery Scratch-off tickets. The Winners were Steve Arum., Joe and Nancy Myer.

Reggie has been contacted about scheduling the next Guest Bartender event.

Vocational Lane:   Director Cal said that the Dictionary Project (free books to third graders at area schools) has concluded for this school year.

HELP is still needed for the mock interviews at Catonsville High School on March 29 from 8 AM until 10 AM. There are 90 students to be interviewed. George, Sherry, and Reggie have volunteered thus far.

Secretary’s E Report:  Does anyone besides Dawn need a new name badge?

International Report:  Chairman Bruce provided a very thorough update on our Club’s next event – The Catonsville Book Fest. On Friday April 27, 2007 we will have Author’s Night. Various local authors are invited to attend and sell their newest publications. We will provide wine, cheese and hors d’oervres.

Ticket prices will remain at the very reasonable $20. We have the entire Library (which closes at 5:30) from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. There will be music.

Last year about 100 tickets were sold. We hope to sell about 200 tickets this year.   Our partners in this event art the Catonsville High School

Folks involved in the literary magazine, Ellipsis, and the Friends of the Library. It was noted that Ellipsis, which we have supported for several years is a very impressive publication containing poetry, stories, photos and drawings by the students of CHS.

Bruce has also decided to sell sponsorships to the event and volunteered to be the first ever $200 sponsor.  George and Joe quickly agreed to join him as sponsors. Bruce would like to have 2 more sponsors.

Used books may be given to George to store in is basement with the hundreds of books tat have already been donated. Please bring your boxes and bags of books to meetings. Help will be needed to move them to the library on 4/27 and then help will be needed to sort them, and then to sell them.

There may have been more business, but these minutes are long enough. That old rascal Medicus was not there and no one else thought to do the 50/50.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Souder
