ROTARY CLUB of
CATONSVILLE - SUNRISE DONATES STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP
The President of the
local Catonsville Sunrise Rotary Club, Doug Scriba,
recently informed CCBC Catonsville President, Dr. Andrew
C. Jones, that their Club voted to donate a $1000 Study
Abroad Scholarship to a CCBC Catonsville student.
President Scriba commented to President Jones, “Rotary was pleased
to listen to your January presentation to our Club, and thought the
idea you outlined to cooperate with the College by
providing a "Study Abroad Scholarship" was excellent.
Rotary is an international service club and this award
is in the true spirit of Rotary.”
President Jones
reacted by thanking the Club on behalf of the Campus.
“We look forward to collaborating in other ways with
Rotary since the this community college is focused on
interacting with our local community in a myriad of
ways.”
The guidelines for
the award are being developed by a joint
Catonsville-Sunrise Rotary Club and CCBC Catonsville Study Abroad Scholarship Committee,
Chaired by Dr. Stephen Arum, Director of International
Education on the Catonsville campus. “My goal, said
Arum, “is to publicize this award all over the campus
with the help of my Student Assistants in the Study
Abroad Advising Center (SAAC) and its web page (www.ccbcmd.edu/academics/studyabroad).
Among the most important qualifications for the award
are:
-
Relevance of the proposed study abroad program to the
student’s career/education goals.
-
Be
an excellent representative of Rotary and CCBC
-
The
study abroad program is eligible for academic credit.
-
Willingness to share plans and experience before and
after the trip.
The current deadline
for applications is May 21, 2003. For further
information and application forms, contact the Study
Abroad Advising Center, K102, 410-455-6134 or
studyabroad@ccbcmd.edu.
The local Rotary
Club and CCBC Catonsville have also collaborated in
developing the Friendship Families Program. “The
Catonsville Rotary Club has now matched over 25 of the
30 international students from the College who applied
to develop a relationship with a local American family,
indicated Arum, “this Program is not a live-in program
but rather one in which the participants meet
occasionally at mutually convenient times in order to
get to know one another and learn about each other’s
cultures.”
President Scriba
added, “Cooperation with CCBC has been mutually
beneficial and we look forward to developing many other
ways in which our club members, members of the Catonsville
community and the College, all benefit from our
collaboration!”
